Medical Equipment

It appears that you will be receiving an equipment bag, so don’t purchase anything. I don’t know how true this is, just keep it in mind.
To begin, this is a list of medical diagnostic equipment that everybody refers to when they say “equipment”:

Stethoscope–for sounds
Otoscope–for ear, nose, and throats
Ophthalmoscope–for eyes
Blood Pressure Cuff (adult and peds)
Reflex Hammer
Pen Light–for pupil response
Pocket Snellen Eye Chart–for visual acuity
Tuning Fork–For Rinne and Webber Tests (hearing) and neurological vibratory sensation tests

This list is just for your reference so you know what is considered “basic diagnostic equipment” (lemme know if I’m forgetting something).

Now, what you should get for school:

Every student should buy a stethoscope. The first week or two into school Welch Allyn (sp...) will come to school to sell their products (overpriced, IMHO). You can get your equipment then (stethoscope).

I differ from many on the other equipment. I feel VERY strongly that students should buy an otoscope, ophthalmoscope, BP cuff, reflex hammer (get the “readyreflex” from a drug rep for your stethoscope), pocket snellen, and a pen light. I am constantly looking in my daughters’ and wife’s ears. I feel so much more comfortable with these aspects of a physical exam because I have the equipment. Outside of the $1000 I spent on my tablet, the $300 I spent on my diagnostic equipment was the best money I have spent at KCOM. You might want to wait until 3rd quarter to buy the majority of the equipment, except the stethoscope.

In retrospect, I wish I had purchased a pocket set (http://steeles.com/welchallyn/WA_2_5vPocketSet.html) instead of the full size set. When I’m on the floor, it would be nice to have a pocket set with me, instead of begging the staff to loan the floor’s set to me. This shouldn’t be a problem in a clinic, but, on the floor is a different story.

Finally, you should get an OMM table. I never did, and I still wish I had. I use OMM on my family on an almost daily basis. If you join UAAO, then you will get a sweet deal on an OMM table purchased from Dr. Puckett’s Osteopathic Equipment store. Check out the “KCOM Clubs (http://www.atsudo.org/forums/../index.php?option=com_openwiki&Itemid=&id=kcom_clubs)” section of this site for more info.
