The Class

The course is divided into three specific courses, namely Neuro I, which covers the basics of neurophysiology and neuroanatomy. Neuro II covers the more specific anatomical and physiological systems, such as the auditory, olfactory, and visual. Neuro II also is where the neurology course is taught. Neuro III is the psychiatry course, and is taught by Dr. Goldman as well as the pharmacology department.

The Professors

Dr. Uray Dr. Carlson–this is Dr. Carlson’s area of specialty and he does an excellent job teaching this material.

The Content

Neurophysiology

Dr. Carlson will teach all of these lectures, and he does an excellent job. He will handout the same packet that he gave you during the physiology course. If you learned the material well back in the physiology course, you probably won’t even open these notes. If you did poorly on that material, you will want to freshen up. He generally has a quiz before every lecture. These are EXCELLENT opportunities to study the material, which makes studying for the test easy. Take advantage of these opportunities to learn the material.
Neuroanatomy

Dr. Uray put together a bunch of cross sections and split the notes so that on one side are notes and the other are the cross section that is related to those notes. These cross sections are extremely high yield and well worth your time to memorize over and over (you might even see something similar on the boards...I didn’t, but, I did in verbose form). Tablet users will be wise to screen clip the pictures, then, try over and over to name the structures. Start from either top and move down, or, go inferior to superior.

Lab

Lab is much easier than in Anatomy. There weren’t any quizzes, and nobody to make certain you were doing a good dissection. You also choose your lab group. There are videos that are shown at the beginning of lab that detail the dissection. These are excellent and are worth watching again before the lab exam (1.5 speed).

Lab Exam

The exam is a powerpoint exam, like the Histo image exam, however, it is MUCH easier than the histo exam. It is fill in the blank (well, everything is blank). You would be wise to get a “rubber ducky” brain stem and learn all the landmarks well. Use your netter alongside, since it is so spacial.

Books

Neuro I

The Haines atlas is good. Either buy it or check it out from the library (I would do the latter).

Useful Files/Guides

I forget the name but there are blue atlases in the anatomy lab. We made copies of the pages they recommended us to study ad it did help out on the image exam. ~Michelle Hill

Old Exams

The 2006 Exams are good to review.
