Note Taking
There are many programs out on the market. The three that I have tested extensively are:
* Microsoft OneNote
* Agilix GoBinder
* Microsoft Journal
Microsoft comes out as the VERY obvious winner.
* The note organization is on par with GoBinder (maybe better). Organization is extraordinarily superior to Journal.
* Note searching in OneNote is superior to the other programs, especially since searching only works in Journal if the file is open (as compared to OneNote, which will search the notebooks that are open, not just that single lecture).
* Shared notes are only an option with OneNote
* Audio syncing is only an option with OneNote
* Live Sharing Sessions are only an option with OneNote
Microsoft OneNote 2003 was a revolutionary program. Version 2007 was released in February, and has blown the older version away. One of the drawbacks (not that much of a draw back) is that notes taken with 2007 cannot be opened in 2003. This isn’t a problem, since the students at school all use 2007, so sharing notes is very simple. 2007 also has many many many bug fixes...I can’t imagine anybody recommending 2003 over 2007.
Purchasing Microsoft Office
If you are an ATSU student and have paid your matriculation fee, then, you can get Office 2007 professional for $85 through the school’s license (usually $500). Also, OneNote can be purchased for $20 (normally $100). You will need to buy OneNote by itself, since it isn’t included in Office Professional.
FOR THE NEXT STEPS BELOW, YOU MUST USE INTERNET EXPLORER!
To purchase OneNote and Office (must be done separately), go to:
* click here (http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=87001473LARS) for Office pro
* click here (http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=87071473LARS) for OneNote.
You will then need to provide proof that you are a student. A financial aid award letter, or screen clipping of your account page from ATSU should work. I did the online verification, but I have heard that people had difficulties with it. YMMV.
How to sync notes
Syncing the notes with the lecture audio is as simple as getting an FM radio (preferably a digital one), getting a headphone jack to headphone jack cord (you can buy this at any and every radio shack), and then plugging it into your microphone port on your tablet (right next to the headphone jack). Upon doing this, in Microsoft OneNote (the notetaking program for tablets) you select “record”. As you write notes in class, the program will sync it automatically! Remember, this is done LIVE in class, but, another method can be employed that will allow you to sync lectures that you missed using the Lecture Recordings.
It is really that easy.
